Description by

Norma Shearer and Clark Gable, who provided potent screen chemistry in 1931's A Free Soul, smolder again in the 1932 film version of Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, a compelling and complex drama of jealousy, grief, madness, lust and love. Shearer plays a woman haunted by the death of her sweetheart and by her father's unnatural obsession. She marries a man she doesn't love - and has a child through an adulterous liaison with a handsome doctor (Gable), a secret they keep throughout their lives. The play's famed soliloquies, in which the characters express their thoughts to the audience, made a transition to celluloid as voiceovers, lending a bold, experimental quality to the production.

Product Description:

A vibrant young woman gets caught up in her own lies, as she deceives her husband with his own best friend. An adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play.

Plot Synopsis:

A screen adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's melodrama about the secrets and psychological turmoil of a troubled family. Traumatized by the death of her fiance in World War I, Nina Leeds falls into promiscuity, dallying with the patients at the military hospital where she works as a nurse. Eventually she settles down to a safe, if passionless marriage with a kindly man only to discover, soon afterwards, that his family has a history of mental illness. Her affair with a doctor yields an illegitimate son, but despite Nina's love for the boy's father she cannot bring herself to leave her husband. Though honed down from its original stage length of five hours, Strange Interludes, in its day, was a daring attempt by Hollywood to bring a serious theatrical drama to the screen largely intact.
